Did you know, 2019 saw the lowest number of wild sockeye salmon return to the B.C. coast in history? In the Fraser River, 90% fewer sockeye returned than was forecasted by @fisheriesoceanscan. During their annual journey, sockeye and other threatened species of wild salmon must swim past open-net fish farms that spew a harmful virus called piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) into their migration route.⁣ ⁣ Two years ago, B.C.’s salmon farming industry was caught dumping virus-infected blood into Discovery Passage, a critical area for returning wild salmon. Recent dives in November 2019 by @tavishcampbell have shown the blood is still flowing and is still infected with PRV. This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in B.C.⁣ ⁣ @justinpjtrudeau committed to removing fish farms from the ocean by 2025. Help ensure this promise is kept. Let him and DFO’s Minister, @bernadettejordanmp how much you want them to #GetFishFarmsOut!⁣ ⁣ Learn more in this IGTV video by @TavishCampbell and check out CTV News’ coverage from last night at the link in our bio and stories.⁣ ⁣ #SalmonCount #SalmonNation #WildFirst #Salmon #pacificsalmon

Video by @tavishcampbell // Two years ago, British Columbia’s salmon farming industry was caught dumping virus-infected blood into Discovery Passage, a critical area for returning wild salmon. Recent dives in November 2019 by Collective member @tavishcampbell have shown the blood is still flowing and is still infected with piscine orthoreovirus (PRV). This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in British Columbia. Harbingers of disease and parasites, they threaten wild salmon who share the same waters. Wild sockeye salmon runs this year have plunged, hitting record lows for British Columba. ⠀ ⁣⠀ The Liberal Party of Canada has promised to solve this problem by transitioning fish farms out of the ocean and onto land by 2025. Help ensure they keep their promise by sending a message to @justinpjtrudeau, @fisheriesoceanscan, and @bernadettejordanmp to #GetFishFarmsOut. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Learn more about the plight of salmon on British Columbia’s coast at @tavishcampbell and @mitty. ⠀
